Philippians 2:5-6 IBS

Wednesday August 27th, 2014

Philippians 2:5-6 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,”

“Hah what?” Is my initial thought upon reading these two verses, but the first verse is what is striking to me right now. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,” Obviously it’s talking about the verses to follow, but we are to have a mind like Christ. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Having Christ in us, He allows us to be renewed and to have new thinking basically. Jesus is the ultimate example of how we should be…obviously.

Well the ESV version of verse 6 says, “Who though He was in the form of God did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.” This version makes a little more sense, this is a form of humility. Jesus knew who He was, He knew he was God, yet He didn’t reckon Himself to that level. God is like at the top of the Tower of Doom in Elitch Gardens Denver and Jesus is the one at the bottom, staying in line among the rest of us. That kind of goes into verse seven, which is tomorrow, so I’ll stop there, but the point is Jesus humbles Himself and doesn’t even make Himself alike with God. Every moment of the Crucifixion, Jesus could’ve stopped it, because He is God, but He knew His Father’s will so He didn’t and chastened Himself.

That’s how we should be. Why is it as humans we think so highly of ourselves or greater than those around us? We are dirty rotten sinners. I like the story Pastor Jim told us about greeting people in church. Turn to the guy next to you, he’s just as much of a failure as you are. “Hi, I’m Brittani and I’m a failure.” Only through Christ am I lifted up. What an amazing thing Christ did for us. So just be like Him, be humble and make yourself low.

Application: To remember to be like Christ and to be humble and to lower myself, I will write “be low” on my hand/arm.
